Rigid core vinyl flooring is a new category of vinyl flooring that has a specialized core for added stability and durability. In this category, you will find WPC, SPC and hybrid vinyl flooring.

SPC and hybrid vinyl flooring have many similar features, but they also have a few main differences. We will compare the main similarities and differences between SPC vs hybrid vinyl flooring, so you can make an educated decision on which type of vinyl is right for your project.

SPC vs Hybrid Vinyl Flooring Differences

Construction – Both SPC and hybrid vinyl floors are a rigid core construction, meaning their core is stable, durable and thicker than a traditional LVT.

The main difference lies in the hybrid flooring wear layer. A hybrid floor combines the wear layer of a laminate, making it stain resistant, dent proof and fade proof. With an SPC vinyl, the wear layer can be more susceptible to certain chemical stains and fading, as it uses the same top coating as an LVT.

Price – An SPC vinyl is one of the most affordable rigid core options. It adds tremendous value for the affordable price tag. Due to the engineering, a hybrid vinyl will be a more expensive option, going for $4+ per square foot.

SPC vs Hybrid Vinyl Flooring Similarities

100% Waterproof – SPC and hybrid vinyls are 100% waterproof. These are the best options for projects within areas of climate changes, humidity and moisture.

Availability – Both SPC and hybrid vinyl floors are available in a variety of colors, decors, patterns, textures and plank widths. The digital printing technology on these types of floors is some of the best.

Application – Like most vinyl flooring options, SPC and hybrid vinyls can be installed below, on and above grade. They are great flooring options for kitchens, baths and laundry rooms. These two options are the highest rated for commercial applications, such as cafes, restaurants and boutiques.

Maintenance & Cleaning – All vinyl flooring options are very easy to clean and maintain. It just takes a little effort to regularly sweep and deep clean occasionally

Underlayment – It is common for SPC and hybrid vinyls to come with attached underlayment. Due to their rigid cores, an attached underlayment will add more comfort and cushion underfoot. If the floors do not have attached underlayment, you can opt for a vinyl underlayment to install beneath the floors.

Subfloor – Both SPC and hybrid vinyls can be installed over plywood, cement and existing floors.

Installation – SPC and hybrid vinyl floors are floating floors with DIY friendly installation methods. They are installed easily with a tongue and groove system.

Dent Resistance – With the rigid core construction, both SPC and hybrid vinyls are very dent resistant.
