Laminate flooring, as a very ancient flooring, was invented and developed jointly by Austria chipboard manufacture and Sweden manufacture in 1985. And it developed very fast from 1998~2000 in Europe and started to enter Chinese market from 1995.

Laminate flooring is very famous with its most similar and vivid surface texture with solid wood flooring. It is more durable than solid wood flooring and meanwhile it is cheaper. Thus it has been widespread use in many areas since 2000.

However, as laminate flooring is mainly made of wood fiber and glue. People will worry about two points, durability and health. As we know, wood fiber has a good affinity to water. It will start to deform and swell after absorbing moisture and can not recover any more. Therefore it is not suitable for humid environment. Also, it is not anti-termite and anti-insect due to its organic materials, it is not a good choice for South East Asia market. Commonly most glue will release formaldehyde and sometimes even bad smell, which will be very harmful to people

Commonly most glue will release formaldehyde and sometimes even bad smell, which will be very harmful to people’s health.

In order to solve these issues, many manufactures start to develop waterproof laminate flooring. The first method is to use high-density fiber board(HDF) as its core to enhance its water resistant performance. HDF inner wood fiber integrate with each other more closely than regular fiber board by glue. Just the opposite, if you want to make wood fiber substances become more closely, you should add more glue, which will cause more formaldehyde and harmful volatile. So they are on the contradictory to each other. Due to this reason, human start to find and keep a balance between them. Based on strictly speaking, laminate can not be describe as ‘Waterproof’ but as ‘Water Resistant’.

How to evaluate waterproof performance?

Here i will introduce a concept called ‘Swelling Rate’ firstly. It means the size deformation to original size, which represents its waterproof performance. Here i will show you the method to test laminate waterproof performance.

Preparation

1. A large enough bath tub

2. Micrometer

3. Two specimens

Environment

Control and keep the atmosphere temperature around 23(±2)℃ and 50(±5)% relative humidity.

Steps

1_Choose three measuring points on each specimens. One specimen on its width and the other on its length. Then measure its initial thickness by micrometer and then record total six points data as Tin1~Tin6.

2_Put them in a constant environment as above required and last for about 24h.

3_After 24h in bath tub, pick them up and dry them by towel. Then measure their six points final thickness by micrometer and then record them as Tfin1~Tfin6.

4_Calculating the first point swelling rate as below formula:

Then calculate all left points swelling rate with same formula and use their average data as final swelling rate.

Commonly most of laminate in the market swelling rate is less than 18%. Whereas, Protex’ laminate flooring can reach less than 10% or even 5%. We call it as ‘CWC’, a super waterproof laminate flooring.

Laminate flooring is more suitable for living room or dining room at home. It gives you and guests a very comfortable foot feeling and an elegant texture feeling.
