If you’ve never lived in Japan before, then sleeping on the floor might seem pretty strange. Having lived in several apartments in Japan where I slept on the floor, I can personally attest to it having a lot of advantages. So much so that when given the choice between the two, I often pick the floor over the bed. And I’m not alone; many households in Japan agree too!
That’s why today we’re counting the top reasons sleeping on the floor Japanese-style is awesome. Why would Japanese ever want to sleep on the hard ground instead of a soft bed? Let’s find out.
It can be better for your body
It might seem that nothing could be better for your health than sleeping on a nice, thick, soft mattress, but that’s not necessarily true. Mattresses can put our bodies in strange positions when we sleep, and then we stay like that for hours while unconscious, potentially causing bone and muscle misalignment over time. But sleeping on the floor can help keep your back, head, hips, and shoulders in a straight, neutral position while you’re asleep, which may help prevent small damages that build up.
It is cheaper
Beds are expensive. Not only do you have to get the blankets, pillows and sheets, but there’s the mattress, the box spring, the frame, the headboard… it goes on an on and can really add up. When you sleep on the floor though, all you need are the blankets, pillows, sheets, and the thin mattress to sleep on. As I known some floors, such as Vinyl flooring, SPC flooring, WPC flooring for less cost but easily get your sleeping area!
Reduces Back Pain
Sleeping on the floor can be good for your spine. You don’t have a soft mattress hugging your body, so your spine gets a chance to realign itself – to its natural posture. You also experience a greater level of body awareness when on the floor.
But be wary about your sleeping position on the floor – sleeping on the back works best. Sleeping on the side forces your hip flexors and hamstrings to tighten over time, and this leads to additional pain. Also, make sure to place a pillow under your knees or calves – this helps induce a more natural curve on your back.
Helps Improve Posture
Sleeping on the floor can also improve one’s posture. It forces your back, neck, and the head into proper alignment – and this corrects your posture. And since it helps ease back pain, this also contributes to a better posture. Because back pain is one reason people have poor posture – and vice versa.
Can Treat Insomnia
A bad sleeping surface is one of the major reasons for insomnia. You keep tossing and turning the entire night, only to wake up feeling groggy and sleep-deprived the next morning. If your mattress is giving you sleep troubles, sleeping on the floor could be the way to go. You might have some discomfort initially, but once your body adjusts, you are good to go.
Your Rest and Energy
Sleeping on the floor can also lead to feeling more rested. People who sleep on the floor find themselves not only feeling more rested, but more ready to get up in the morning. Sometimes sleeping in a bed can be too comfortable, which is why we hit the snooze button once or twice each morning.
When sleeping on the floor, you get the right quality of sleep, and you’re not so comfortable that you want to stay laying there for some time.
