Since outbreak of pandemic corona virus, more and more industries are focusing on masks. In a flash, N95, FFP2, 3M, KN95 these key words became popular and hot overnight. However, do you really need to wear N95 surgical mask when you only take out garbage downstairs, or go out for purchasing your dinner raw materials from supermarket?
Definitely, the answer is No! Only health care professionals should wear surgical masks or N95 respirators.
With such similar sounding names, it can be confusing to understand the difference between N95 and KN95 masks. What are KN95 masks, and are they the same as N95 masks? Here I would like to explain the differences between N95 and KN95 masks as far as I have researched lots of paper.
In short, N95 masks are the US standard for respirator masks; KN95 masks are the Chinese standard for masks. These are the requirements that the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) requires manufacturers to meet in order to label their masks as N95s. Despite the subtle difference, the two masks are equivalent or nearly equivalent on the features that most people care about.
Lots of users care most about what percentage of particles the masks capture. On this metric, N95 and KN95 masks are the same. Both masks are rated to capture 95% of tiny particles (0.3 micron particles, to be exact).
Here are the key differences:
1. N95 masks have slightly stricter requirements for pressure drop while inhaling. That means they’re required to be slightly more breathable than KN95 masks.
2. N95 also have slightly stricter requirements for pressure drop while exhaling, which should help with breath ability.
Since N95 surgical mask is non-resistance to oil, but it has to reach the requirement of fluid resistance. It means that the mask must prevent the patients’ blood and body fluid from splashing on the doctor’s face during the surgical operation. And during the long time of surgical operation, the mask should help with breath ability. However, this function is totally unnecessary for ordinary people.
