Acoustic flooring, as a new flooring concept in recent years, is very unfamiliar to people. During flooring fast development nowadays, current function can not meet customers' more and more detailed requirement. Thus various kinds of new flooring go into public sight. According to its name, acoustic flooring is related to sound. Thus you can also call it as 'Soundproof flooring' or 'Sound-resistant flooring'.

Now more and more people start to pay attention to quiet environment due to too much noise from many areas in daily life. Such as people's loud speaking, cars' trumpet and walking trampling noise will influence you a lot if you want to concentrate on reading some book or just taking a rest. In this situation, acoustic flooring appeared.

Acoustic flooring has a special structure as image shows. It has similar layer to regular SPC such as UV coating, wear layer, color film and underlay. The main difference is in its core. It uses A-B-A frame just like ESPC (LVT-SPC-LVT), and the middle layer is called buffer layer, which is made of high-density IXPE.

During factory production, workshop will produce SPC core firstly by extrusion technology. It should be noticed that the top SPC will combine with wear layer, color film and UV coating in advance. After 24h conditioning, they will integrate the top SPC, the buffer layer and the bottom SPC together by PUR glue. Then after gluing together, conditioning is not necessary because PUR glue has already solidified.

 


What are the characteristics of Acoustic Flooring?

Acoustic flooring was invented mainly to reach soundproof function, has many other advantages as well.

Soundproof

It has an excellent soundproof performance based on its unique structure. As we know, sound energy will consume and reduce through different media. Acoustic flooring's A-B-A frame can highly decrease sound energy during transmission. What's more, the middle buffer layer has been added foaming agents, which will make the layer have many holes and gaps inside. Sound will reflect off when passing holes and gaps. Then after many times reflecting, sound energy will decrease a lot. Acoustic flooring underlay as an optional choice, can help decrease sound energy as well. Stable

SPC is well know as its outstanding stability based on its stone crystal structure. A-B-A structure like SPC-IXPE-SPC will gain a more stable frame to adjust various environment.


Soft foot feeling

It is also a good choice for those people who pay more attention to foot feeling due to its inner buffer layer. Soft underlay can also be added based on customers' requirement.


How to test soundproof of acoustic flooring?

Commonly there are two main methods to test its soundproof performance. Firstly, i need to introduce some soundproof concepts because these will help you understand more about the difference of three testing methods and their referred using areas.


What determines the sound?

Sound is described by two main indicators: loudness and tone. They are different and separate with each other.

1_Loudness, can be measured as decibels(dB)

2_Tone, can be measured as frequencies(Hz)

What will happen when sound hits the object surface?

Sound will showcase different states as below 3 ways:

1_Some of the sound will reflect off

2_Some of the sound will be absorbed by the object

3_Some of the sound will pass through the object

What factors will affect the sound energy?

1_Sound energy will decrease when passing through different materials

2_Sound energy will decrease when reflecting off

3_Sound energy will decrease when travelling long distance

4_Sound energy will be reflected off more when passing through high-density materials while sound will be absorbed more when passing through low-density materials.

Next i will show you the different test methods details. There are three regular testing standard called STC, IIC and NRC.


STC (Sound Transmission Class)

This testing method is purposed to evaluate the sound transmission loss after spreading from source room to receiving room. Thus it is mainly used to assess wall panel. It is operated in laboratory and is mainly used to test the partition between two rooms.

Let me show you the entire STC testing progress in laboratory through an example:

Environment: temperature: 12℃; relative humidity: 60%; volume of source room: 77m2; volume of receiving room: 112m2; specimen area: 12.1m2

Condition: 150mm thickness concrete on partition between two rooms

Specimen: size 1524x180mm, thickness 4.5mm SPC+1.5mm EVA

Steps:

1_The sound generator in source room will launch the frequencies range from 100 to 5000Hz.

2_Record the receiving room sound pressure level(Ln, unit dB) based on different frequencies.

3_Calculate the sound transmission loss(TL) from source room to receiving room.

4_Draw the TL data as a graph, and then compare and find the most similar standard curve..

5_Select the data at 500Hz in standard curve and this TL data is considered as STC level

According to the above graph, the TL data of standard curve at 500Hz is 52dB, which means the specimen can reduce about 52dB when sound travelling through this material. Thus the conclusion is that STC testing level is STC 52. It does not represent the material at this level can always reduce 52dB. It depends on different frequencies. Actually, in daily life, many other factors will influence the ear hearing. Another similar test called NIC (Noise Insulation Class) tests in actual environment and will consider the receiving room absorption as well.

STC pay more attention to the partition only while NIC will consider more actual factors. Despite of this, STC is still an important test to evaluate sound resistant performance.

Based on above sheet, it is obviously that STC 52 can isolate much loud noise from another room. It represents a marvelous sound resistant for spreading sound such as people

IIC (Impact Insulation Class)

This testing method is purposed to evaluate the impact sound transmission loss after spreading from source room to receiving room. Thus is is mainly used to assess flooring. There is a delta IIC testing method as well. It is used to evaluate the sound resistant performance of additional pad such as cork, IXPE or EVA.

Let me show you the entire IICC testing progress in laboratory through an example. It is under same environment, conditions and specimen with STC:

Environment: temperature: 12℃; relative humidity: 60%; volume of source room: 77m2; volume of receiving room: 112m2; specimen area: 12.1m2


Condition: 150mm thickness concrete on partition between two rooms

Specimen: size 1524x180mm, thickness 4.5mm SPC+1.5mm EVA

Steps:

1_The tapping machine in source room will impact the flooring based on frequencies range from 100 to 5000Hz.

2_Record the receiving room sound pressure level(Ln, unit dB) based on different frequencies.

3_Draw the Ln data as a graph, and then compare and find the most similar standard curve..

5_Select the data at 500Hz in standard curve, and then calculate the data subtracted from 110dB. This data is considered as IIC level.

According to the above graph, the L:n data of standard curve at 500Hz is 54dB, then after calculated by ‘110dB-54dB=56dB’, it means the specimen can reduce about 56dB when impact sound travelling through this material. Thus the conclusion is that IIC testing level is IIC 56. It is like STC level that is tested in laboratory.

Commonly when IIC level reaches 50, it is good. And when it reaches 55, it is very good. If it can reach 60 or higher, it is excellent. Refer to this sheet, it is easily to compare and make the conclusion that IIC 56 represents very outstanding sound resistant performance for impact sound such as people’s walking and heavy things dropping.
